Safety in Cape Coast ,Ghana What do other Racers need to know in order to be safe? Current safety protocols/precautions in place? Any relevant issues/concerns? Any precautionary suggestions?
People’s Opinions
We felt super safe to walk around town by ourselves. It is a pretty touristy area, so you are fine to walk around alone, but being with one more person is probably the best idea. At night we would walk back from ministry as a team, and we felt pretty safe. Cape coast is a very friendly area.
Cape Coast is very safe, everyone is very friendly and approachable. They always ask, “Where are you going?”. My default response is Heaven. đ Use your discernment when going out after dark.

People’s Opinions
Our team stayed at the Acts 2 collective mission house. It was formerly a hotel called In Thee Lodge. This compound is where they have a rehab center for men of the community who are in rehabilitation from drugs or alcohol, a couple men stay there, along with some children who the organization supports to go to school. The hotel is pretty large, there was 5 people on our team, and we all had the option of havin our own rooms. We ended up staying with two in two rooms and one in another. The place is pretty nice, we all had our own bed, lots of space for storage, and a bathroom. There is no running water on the compound, so we had bucket showers and used a bucket to flush the toilet. We loved staying here, and it was a short distance into the town, and then not a far taxi ride from cape coast.
Food / Meals
Food / Meals in Cape Coast ,Ghana What did you eat? Where did you get the food? Cost (per person per day in USD)? Contact info (if applicable).
People’s Opinions
All of our meals were made by the women that worked at Acts 2 collective. The food was super good, and they were more than willing to change things based on what we liked. On off days and adventure days, we asked to be on our own for food. There are a couple places in town that have food for semi cheap, or we went to Malcomâs and got small groceries. Most off days we went to Oasis and got food there. The food isnât the best, and it isnât the cheapest, but it is one of the only places with WiFi, so we would always go back. Check out New Beginnings coffee shop. Itâs not far from Oasis, between there and the castle. They have really good food for a good price, and amazing iced coffee.
Transportation

People’s Opinions
We used taxis everyday. The transportation budget that was on the set up sheet was not enough to cover the expenses for the whole month. Taxis are fairly cheap, we could get from In Thee Lodge in Nkanfa to town for around 8-10 cedis. The taxi drivers will try to rip you off, so just know how much you should be paying and walk away if they wonât lower it. After a while of being in town, most of the drivers knew us and would give us a fair price.
Medical
Medical in Cape Coast ,Ghana Information on local hospitals / doctors / pharmacies. Where would someone go in a medical emergency? (addresses and contact info).
People’s Opinions
We had a couple instances with doctors/ medical incidents. A couple people on my team had malaria, intestinal/ bacteria infections, or different sicknesses. There are a lot of good hospitals in the area. Listen to your host, and they will be able to tell you the best one based on what you want to pay (I.e there is a British hospital that is way more expensive, but has good service. You can pay less and get seen faster at other hospitals). There is also a pretty reliable lab close to town that will test you pretty fast, but they are not friendly at all. Overall, just listen to the host, Uncle P was very helpful with taking us where we needed to go.

Our team went to the national forest and did the suspension bridges. We absolutely loved it! We were also going to go to the monkey park that is not far down from Kakum, but when we pulled up to it, we could see the monkeys were all in cages, and it looked super sketchy, so we decided it wasnât worth the money.Another adventure day we had was going to the Cape Coast Castle. It was relatively cheap (if you have a student ID, use it!) and super interesting. We went on a tour of the whole castle, which is included in the price, and walked around the museum. Not an all day adventure, so we still had time for rest. Most of our off days were spent at Oasis beach.
If you love national parks and/or forests, definitely check out Kakum National Park. There are a set of canopys that are suspended from tree top to tree top. It’s a little hike maybe 3 miles total. Takes a little over an hour. It’s 30 cedi to get in and another 30 cedi round trip for a transport. There are tons of awesome photo opportunities.
