Safety

  • I always felt very safe in our living location.  However, some of the locals (cab drivers especially) would refuse to drive us out there because they felt it was a very dangerous place.

Ministry Summary

  • Ministry involves working with a local school and attending church services.  It was really affected by the weather, which led to a lot of down time.  You might have to create your own ministry (praying, worshipping, team time) to fill your time.
  • “Our presence was extremely encouraging to the ministry, but we didn’t have a lot of tangible ministry to do.” Rating (1-4): 2.5

Lodging

A little house up the mountain. 

  • No running water (outhouses for toilets)
  • There is a spring down the mountain, showering there was an option
  • Minimal electricity
  • Slept in tents and hammocks in a building
  • “We learned how to live simply in the beauty that God made”
  • No housing costs

Food / Meals

  • Prepare your own food
  • Bring the food up the mountain from a grocery store in Cobán
  • Cook over a gas stove
  • Food is very cheap
  • In Cobán find Taquiera Jalisco: tacos for 5 Q.  Most delicious tacos of your life.  The people who work there are awesome and good friends.  Will speaks really good English.

Transportation

  • To get to Cobán is a 50 cent (USD) bus ride, about 30 minutes.  Or you can walk across the mountain.
