Safety in Choluteca, Honduras What do other Racers need to know in order to be safe? Current safety protocols/precautions in place? Any relevant issues/concerns? Any precautionary suggestions?
People’s Opinions
I’ve traveled to Choluteca on 4 separate occasions and have felt very safe walking around in various neighborhoods during the day. However, at night, we always stayed with a group, no matter where we went. As a female, you will receive many comments from men on the streets and in the communities, especially if your attire does not match that of the locals. However, I have never felt threatened or afraid here (except from a scary dog once lol)
Choluteca is one of the safer large cities in Honduras, but that being the case, its still not safe to go out walking at night. Women will get a fair amount of comments from men/boys here.

My team worked with the GCLA church here. They are awesome and have a strong thriving church. You get a lot of ministry options at first. They want you to be comfortable but also they want to see you buying into the culture and people. We got there month 9 and it was good for us but hard. My host family, Nubia and Dali, were amazin. They are learning English and then loved us so well. The only bad thing was that we all got split up into 5 different houses. 2 people in each house and that made team time stuff difficult but it was good.Just got at every thing wanting to love them and serve where you can and you will do great.

People’s Opinions
We stayed in two’s with host families for the month. We ate a lot of meals with our host family and gave them $2.00 per meal. Food here is almost US prices at the grocery store so in reality we may have not been giving them enough depending on if the meal included meat, ect. Their are plenty of american fast food options in town, again the problem just being they have american prices. Chicken Crumch is one local spot we at at a few times. It had pretty decent meal option for around $3.00.

We used “Angel Nunez Ejecutivo en Turismo” to take a private van from Tegusigulpa (the capital) to Choluteca. Phone: 504-9883-8226 or 504-3327-3369. email: angelcota12@hotmail.com The cost was $120 USD total, so $20 per person, which is more expensive than what a public bus would be but it worked great considering we had all of our packs and everything.

The ATM we always used was located at MAXI grocery store. If you are at Uni Mall (the only mall in town) you just take a right out of the parking lot and its down the road about a 5 minute walk and on the left hand side.

People’s Opinions
San Marcos De Colon is a town up in the mountains about a 1 hour bus ride from Choluteca. The bus only costs $1.50 so its worth it even if its just a day trip. It has a few restaurants, an ice cream shop, and a city park in the center. Its a great spot if you just need a day out of the heat as its about 80 degrees there during the day as opposed to 100+ in Choluteca. If you’re looking to stay the night, you can stay at Hotel Barcelona. Its a really small town so you can find the hotel with ease just by asking someone and will be within a 10 minute walk wherever you are in town. Hotel Barcelona cost $18 USD for 1 room. To get to San Marcos De Colon just show up to the bus station in Choluteca. The buses don’t seem to leave at a consistent time per say so you may just have to go to the station and wait for the next one.
We used the pool at Hotel Paradiso (see above in lodging section). The pool was 70 limpura or $3.50 USD for the day. It’s not the greatest pool but with it being 100 degrees here every day it was worth it just to cool down for 2 hours.

Almost every little store will sell these bags of water for 2 limpura. They are super cheap and necessary with the heat when your bottle runs out.
