Safety

Safety in Athi River, Kenya
What do other Racers need to know in order to be safe? Current safety protocols/precautions in place? Any relevant issues/concerns? Any precautionary suggestions?

People’s Opinions

  1. Athi River was safe, we would walk to church and never felt pressured by anyone. It was the same way when we went into Machakos for groceries, snacks, wifi, just stay in groups.

Where did you stay? What were the accommodations (sleeping arrangements, toilets, showers, etc.)? Cost (per person per night in USD), Contact info.

People’s Opinions

  1. The first week we were in our tents, then after that we were in dorm style rooms. The compound has squatty potties and bucket showers (you can heat up water for a warm shower).

What did you eat? Where did you get the food? Cost (per person per day in USD)? Contact info (if applicable).

People’s Opinions

  1. TONs of rice and ugali, outside of that you didn’t get much. Chipati was available everyonce in awhile. If you take a $30 taxi into Machakos you can go to the grocery store and get snacks and also go to the Gelin (I believe its called) Hotel and they have really good food there.

Off Days / Fun Activities

Off Days / Fun Activities in Athi River, Kenya
What activities did your team experience? Recommendations? List locations/contact info. Any locations to be avoided? Any extra safety tips for off days?

People’s Opinions

  1. We typically went into Machakos on off days, you can also go to Nairobi as well. You can also walk into the backyard of the compound and see zebras, wildebeest, giraffes, gazelles and sometimes ostriches as well. We also did a 2 day safari to Masai Mara which was AMAZING. The people at the base know the guides they can give you a pretty good deal. I believe we paid $300 and that included transportation, lodging, and food.
