  1. Pakse is a small town. Most things shut down early and it is hard to find tuk tuk’s after 8 pm. There is a curfew at 11 pm over the city and the government comes out to patrol. It is a safe town just be cautious and also beware of the dogs.

Lodging

  • In Pakse, stay at the Lan Kham Hotel; $4-5 per night and had hot showers, clean rooms, and one bottle of water per person per day.
  • Free wifi in the lobby, but not consistently working.

  1. Nang Noi Guesthouse-We stayed here for the entire month of December. It’s conveniently located in the heart of the city and within walking distance to the market and good restaurants we enjoyed and the coffee shop.-$4.37 per night (around 35,000 kip a night) If you tell them you are with a group and on a budget, they will work with you.-Staff speaks English and are very friendly.-Hot showers, excellent free wifi, clean beds (they clean your room and supply new bedding and towels when you need), western toilets, no AC unless you want to pay extra but they supply fans, you can lock up your valuables when you leave.-Clean hostel, safe, quiet-Bike (15,000 kip per bike) and moped rentals are within budget and they can help in booking bus tickets and planning off-day activities.-You can buy large jugs of water for 10,000 kip instead of having to filter or buy small bottles of water each day.

Room was spacious could fit 4-6 people depending on how crammed you want to be.Alisa Guest House; double room with ac & twin room (2 beds) with ac $15 – Triple room (1 double, 1 single, or 3 singles) with ac $18– Great english, friendly and helpful.Lao Cha Leune Hotel; 2 twin beds with ac $19 – 3 beds with ac $27– Very freindlyThalaung Hotel; 2 twin beds fan & cold water $7 – 2 double beds ac and hot water $18Sabaidy Guest House; Dorm style $3 per bed – double room with communal shower $8 – triple room with communal shower $11 – double room with own shower $10 – double room with fan $12 – double room with ac $16-Very quiet, minimal english.Vilaysak Guest House; 2 beds with fan $10 (there is space for 3 or so depending on cramped you want to be) – 2 beds with ac $12-Super friendly, offered discount if you stay more then one night. Spoke pretty good english

Food / Meals

  • There were places where you could find meals for budget (~15,000 KIP). Check out Jasmin, an Indian food restaurant.
  • Vegetarian curry dishes were 10,000 KIP and a side of naan (dipping bread) was 5,000 KIP. It also has free wifi for customers.
  • Champady, a coffee shop, had 12,000 KIP hamburgers, chicken burgers, and pork burgers. It, too, has free wifi and excellent iced coffee choices.

Groceries:Friendship Supermarket – located across the street from the Pakse New Market is a great spot for the necessities.Pakse New Market Food Court – really cheap, great food, may get stomach issuesMD’s coffee shop – located right next to friendship supermarket. Great coffee, iced lattes, and green tea. A/C inside and a great environment.
  2. 1) Dao Lin : popular tourist food place just down the street from Nang Noi Guesthouse.* from the hostel – take a left turn out of home to the next street, take another left and walk down to the major intersection or road. you will see a restaurant right across the street with outdoor seating and there ya are!* several options within budget: fruit, chicken sandwich, pad tahi, sweet and sour chicken, fried rice, tuna sandwich, breakfast options.*smoothies weren’t very good …watered down with little flavor*there are better places to get your coffee than to go here as well.2) Hasans Indian restaurant – right next to Dao Lin* Naan (butter, stuffed, garlic, cheese)*several kinds of curry*chicken sandwich*pancake (yes, 1 pancake and you don’t get syrup but its a good one)* Samosas*rice options*Mango juice – my favorite! made from a real mango!3) Fresh Market – from Nang Noi guesthouse take a right and go straight through the first major intersection. Pass the nice hotel and restaurant on the right and keep going straight until you get to the next intersection and take a left. walk straight and the market will be right there.*fruits*breads*we got food for breakfast here so we wouldn’t have to go out in the mornings4) Rice place – we never really learned the name of this place but its right before you get to the market on your left. Great fried rice and noodle…they only sell those two options really but its good food and cheap.5) Minimart – Left out of Nang Noi, Left at the end of the road, Left at the intersection walk down past the ATM and the minimart will be on your right.nacks*ice cream*nutella*toiletries6) Delta – Left out of Nang Noi, Left at next street, Right at the intersection and then walk till you hit it on the right.*great coffee*no wifi*food looks promising but its not great (I got the mac and cheese and got sick that night…and it wasnt real mac and cheese either so kinda a loose loose…) food is pricey too but the coffee is a nice treat.
  3. Most food and simple dishes (fried rice – noodles and such) average around $2.25 per dish. During the off season with out the street vendors it is a little more diffucult to find things in the “normal budget”, if you are staying Lan Kahm Hotel there is a corner restraunt called Doa Lin with lots of variety and cheaper/average prices.

  1. Most tuk tuk’s cost 10,000 kip per person. This month we made friends with a driver who took us to our host everyday. His name is Cat. He is very reliable and speaks some english.His number is 54757271.

  4. Transportation is somewhat pricy compared to most SE Asian countries. Everything is somewhat spread out and and unless you want to walk alot you can take tuk tuks averaging $1 per person for “Short” distances. Motor bikes are definately the cheaper option to go but slightly higher risk.Traffic is not heavy and they do drive on the right side of the road with simular laws. Moter bike rental for an automatic is approximately $11 per day plus petrol. If you are traversing alot through the city it is cheaper. (A manuel moped is $7 per day)

Off Days / Fun Activities

  • The big Bhudda on the other side of the Mekong River is worth checking out. It involves walking across a never-ending bridge and climbing a lot of sketchy stairs.

  1. We rented mopeds and drove about 40km (about 45 minutes) to some waterfalls-Tad Champi and a few others that are all close. We had to pay between 5,000-10,000 kip to get into the waterfall and park the bikes. You can swim in some of that waterfalls and take a hammock to hang out for the day. It was pretty quiet when we went and didn’t see many people while we were there. Take some food because there aren’t many options around that area.

  1. We were UH this month and it was hard for us to find contacts. Don’t get discouraged if you struggle finding contacts or things to do, we spent a lot of time together as a team and were able to pour into each other a lot more this month than we have in the past. We spent a lot of time in prayer and processing the past few months with each other. Sometimes we were frustrated having so much down time, but really take advantage of it to process and walk through stuff with the Lord and your team. It has been a really beneficial time for us.
