People’s Opinions

  1. We walked most places that we needed to go in town, there were times that we needed to drive to our ministry sites and the bishop drove us in his SUV which has space for eight comfortably (he typically took two trips to fit everyone on the two teams that were staying with him.) When we did drive we helped fill the bishop’s tank. Total we ended up paying around $75 USD in local transportation in Mpeketoni.

People’s Opinions

  1. There is a hospital one block away from our housing, I don’t know how good the medical care is, but it is the only major hospital in the area. They provide very cheap stool and blood testing to check for diseases.

Did you have cell reception / Internet service? Where? Carrier / Provider, where did you get phones / SIM cards, cost? Country code?

People’s Opinions

  1. We purchased a Safaricom SIM card from the Yaya mall in Nirobi before leaving for Mpeketoni, but there is a Safaricom shop where SIM cards can be purchased and activated near the bus station in Mpeketoni. We had good service most of the time wherever we were. The SIM card cost just under $2.50 USD and airtime was available at most little stores. We used around $8 USD of airtime for the month. The country code is +254 Internet is available at an internet cafe a few blocks away from our housing. It is one shilling per minute but it is very slow and you have to use their computers. We also had a modem and were able to get internet for 2 shillings per MB without a data package with Safaricom.

  1. We had the chance to go to a local beach that was around 10-15 km away from our housing. It cost 200 Shillings round trip per person to have motorbikes take us there. Lamu island is about an hour away and cost each person around $10 USD for transportation (taxis and boat) to get two and from the island. Lamu has a great beach and lots of little shops and a cultural museum (which we didn’t go in to because it would cost around $5 per person.) There is also a wildlife center about 3 km from our housing which is a big lake with lots of hippos and birds (the hippos come out of the water in the evenings.) This is free.

Tips

People’s Opinions

  1. The town is fairly small, there is a market in the center of town worth exploring, they have cheap fruit and lots of local vendors with clothing, bags, shoes, tailors, etc. They didn’t negotiate too much on their prices (ask the locals what to pay.)
