Safety

Safety in Hetauda, Nepal
What do other Racers need to know in order to be safe? Current safety protocols/precautions in place? Any relevant issues/concerns? Any precautionary suggestions?

People’s Opinions

  1. Hetauda is very safe. We never felt like we were in danger or anything. Just make sure at first that you get your contact (Brother Abhishek or family if you where we were) to go around with you at first so that you can get to know the town and not get lost. Also brother Abhishek does not like anyone out after dark because he says it is dangerous so I would recommend listen to him. His house was very safe and overall we had no problems.Khairang (the village Brother Abhishek minsters at) the other hand you have to be careful. Have good tread on your shoes for the hike as you may be on slippery surfaces or loose gravel on an incline. Try to urge them to leave earlier each day for the hike as they may not understand that it takes you longer for Americans to do the hike. Also be careful at night depending on where you stay. They may tell you not to go outside for certain reasons. Listen to them and they will take great care of you.

Breakthroughs? Suggestions? Concerns? On a scale of 1-4 (1 being not at all, 4 being absolutely) how strongly would you recommend another World Race team go to this ministry location & why?

People’s Opinions

  1. It is what you make it. Minister to brother and his family but also branch out. Let brother Abhishek know that you can handle more time ministering. Make sure the team leader is constantly asking for ministry opportunities for the team. If you do not take the initiative you will likely have a very uneventful, non-restful, and non-encouraging month.

People’s Opinions

  1. When in Khairang you will be living in churches. Stick together when you sleep because you will have a lot of strangers coming in and out. They are all believers and friends so do not worry. We brought one tent so that our married couple could have some alone time.
  2. Lodging was free. Food was $7/day and taken care of by the family. While in Hetauda Sister Minu did all the cooking and there was Chai most days.Water was limited, so only 2 buckets of water were allotted per day for showers. Used sparingly, it meant 4 people could bucket shower per day. We went to the computer place for wifi, but he allowed the team to use it for WR stuff in the house. There was a couple, 2 men, and 3 women. The couple and 3 women stayed in the kids room which had a twin, a double, and a cot-sized bed. 2 men stayed in the living room. The family of 6 slept in the bedroom and the kitchen. The best place to get alone time was on the roof. The dog may eat your clothes, so hang them on the roof. If you’re on the roof, and eating an apple and monkey may come and try to take it from you (as happened to me) so that was kinda scary. 2 toilets, 1 bathing room.

Food / Meals

  • All of your food will be purchased and prepared for you.

People’s Opinions

  1. The price is actually $7 USD pp/pd for food and $2 USD pp/pd for transport. I tried to figure out the details of paying with AIM and so it should be that you only have to pay for food and then transport as needed. However, we had a mix-up about paying because brother Abhishek was told $9 pp/pd and they would be paying for transport. Talk with Bhuvan before getting there and make sure to clarify whether you are paying it all to them or for transport as needed. When arriving in Hetauda discuss the same thing with Abhishek.
  2. All food was prepared for you. We eat ramen noodles, potato curry over rice, lentils, sag (it’s a vegetable). lots of tea.

Transportation

  • Walked/ hiked to most places
  • Tempo ride into town is about 13 Nepali rupees per person

People’s Opinions

  1. There is also a bus to Khairang. It is better to go on the hike to encourage and visit all of brother Abhishek’s church plants but if you cannot do it on the way back then ask him about taking the bus back. Again this is a very hard hike but it is worth it to see and encourage all the churches that Brother has planted.
  2. You will have to hike 3 days to Khairang. In that time we were very confused because brother Abhishek told us many different things. Here is the rundown on the trip: day 1-hike 1.5 hours relatively flat, reach mountain, climb straight up 1-2 hours depending on pace, arrive at home halfway up mountain. Day 2-continue up mountain for 2-3 hours, arrive at home to eat lunch (leave as soon as you can), ascend 20-30 minutes then descend the mountain 1 hour, travel across streams and in valley for 2-3 hours, ascend 1-2 hours, arrive at house for night. Day 3-ascend mountain 1 hour, traverse across mountain top 1.5 hours, descend mountain 1.5 hours, arrive at Khairang church.Summary: You will climb two mountains in the course of your trip. There are many places to stay too and so if you cannot finish a day ask Brother Abhishek about stopping at a home early. You can take more than three days if you need. This is a very difficult trip and I recommend at least someone on your team familiarize themselves with the route I posted otherwise you will be in the dark. Also know that Khairang is in a valley not on top of a mountain like brother will say

People’s Opinions

  1. Be safe and boil your water. There is one spring along the way that brother showed us and said was okay. We all drank from it and he will show it to you. Other than that boil your water always for 10 minutes if possible. The last team did not like the smoky taste of the water and so they drank from another spring they found and got really bad Diarrhea. To reduce the smoke taste ask them to put a lid on it (tic in Nepalese).

Communication

  • Wi- fi at Katmandu Fast-food Restaurant/ bakery in town
  • NCell was the name of our cell provider
  • NCell minutes can be purchased just about anywhere
  • Main NCell center in Hetauda

Communication in Hetauda, Nepal
Did you have cell reception / Internet service? Where? Carrier / Provider, where did you get phones / SIM cards, cost? Country code?

People’s Opinions

  1. We had no coverage while hiking with NCell. Some of the Nepalese had coverage but I don’t know what carrier they had. Consider asking brother what carrier has coverage in Khairang and get a SIM from that carrier for the time you will be there in case of emergencies or if your squad leaders want you to submit CCs over phone like they did me.
  2. I got a sim card from NCell with 1G of data for $12. I also bought Ncell minutes to call home. It was 2.5 cents per minute to call the US. I had an international phone from home.

People’s Opinions

  1. All the kids speak English very well. The mom (sister Minu) loves to learn so help her by teaching her. Brother Abhishek acts like he understands you when in fact most of the time he does not understand your question. So be patient and realize that the answers you get from him may not be correct because he did not actually understand the question even though it seems like he did. Speak simply and with few words.

What activities did your team experience? Recommendations? List locations/contact info. Any locations to be avoided? Any extra safety tips for off days?

People’s Opinions

  1. The market is great and you can get most things for very cheap. The shopping for normal Nepali things I thought was better in Hetauda than in Kathmandu because in Kathmandu it is all touristy whereas Hetauda is not. So consider buying all of your non-touristy things in Hetauda (jackets, shoes, warm clothes, jeans, etc.) and then getting the touristy stuff in Kathmandu.

Other Important Contacts

Other Important Contacts in Hetauda, Nepal
Additional ministry opportunities, local pastors, etc. Relationship & follow up suggestions

People’s Opinions

  1. A follow up with a woman named Donna would be wonderful. Her family lives in an area supported by the government and her husband is not a Christian. She is always so incredibly excited to have guests at her home and would be so blessed and encouraged to have more people come. We also formed a relationship with a tiny little woman that goes to the church. She always dances at the front. You can’t miss her. Anyway, she’s wonderful and lives up and over this hill/mountain. She lives in a village with only two other Christians who just recently came to Christ. She could use all the support and encouragement that she can get. Her ministry and life is so inspiring. We learned so much through her example and hard work.

Tips

People’s Opinions

    1. New Hotel and Restaurant is a little hard to find but it is two or three buildings past the grocery store on the right. It is next to a sweets shop. The sign says free Wifi and if they tell you it will come in tomorrow then that is actually true. Keep going back until they have it because they will eventually.
    2. I went to New hotel and restaurant for Wifi. It’s upstairs and has a yellow sign by the grocery store.

People’s Opinions

  1. Brother Abhishek is amazing. Get to know him and you will not regret it. Also don’t fail to see the beauty in the spread of the gospel and in the environment around you when you are really struggling with the hike.
  2. Buy team toilet paper.Electricity goes out regularly, you might want a back-up batteryThe school around the corner is a good place to do ministry. Its where the kids go to school and church. Lots of students speak pretty good English, especially the teens. They’re mostly Hindu, but the principal is a Christian and missionary.
