Going places in pairs was the best in Zomba. You’ll get a lot of attention, so having a buddy was good. Runners: You can run here too. Hooray! If you have a person on your squad that runs at your pace that is best. Otherwise, just make sure someone leaves at the same time/going the same direction as you, so you can keep an eye out for one another. Our host was fine with having us run. He mainly wanted to make sure that we felt safe at all times.
We never felt extremely unsafe in Zomba, but it was recommended that we not go out after dark and I would definitely say it is smart to stay in after dark or have your driver drop you off right at your gate, especially if your team is all girls. You will probably have instances of men cat calling you especially if you are out late. A lot of times there was a lot of yelling just because the African culture is very loud, but most of the time it is not harassing it is just genuinely their culture.
