People’s Opinions

  1. New Life Children’s Home is a home and school for orphans, children from troubled homes, rescue children, etc. Since Ron and Annette took over, the children have come a long way. Most of the older children speak some English, and are good at carrying out good conversations. As is the case with most Children’s Homes, it takes time for them to warm up to you, but playing soccer is a sure way to speed up that process.
Ministry at New Life will often involve spending time with the kids, playing with them, teaching them English, and hosting mini church services for them. There is also likely to be projects that Ron has for you to help their ministry.
I recommend really spending time trying to invest in both the children and in Ron and Annette. They really are great people.

Lodging

Lodging in Jalaca, Honduras
Where did you stay? What were the accommodations (sleeping arrangements, toilets, showers, etc.)? Cost (per person per night in USD), Contact info.

People’s Opinions

  1. New Life Children’s Home has fully equipped upstairs dorms above their cafeteria and school. It has several bedrooms with bunk beds, 4 bathrooms with (sometimes) hot showers, a living room, and a kitchen with a fridge and freezer. Its a great opportunity to cook some great meals as a team, so feel free to get creative. There’s a possibility of interns and others living in the same space while there, so you may need to be concious of being courteous of noise levels at night, etc. All the people I met, however, we’re great people, and you don’t need to worry much about them intruding on your privacy. When we were there, the ministry contact didn’t have a set price on lodging, so it may be negotiable, but I believe we payed $5 per person per night.

Food / Meals

Food / Meals in Jalaca, Honduras
What did you eat? Where did you get the food? Cost (per person per day in USD)? Contact info (if applicable).

People’s Opinions

  1. When we were in Jalaca, we paid our ministry contacts $2 per person per day for them to make us extra plates of food for lunch, and spent the other $3 per person per day on groceries at a grocery store at a nearby town (about a 30 minute drive). Jalaca is a small town, and I wouldn’t recommend looking for local restaurants to eat at. Groceries are fairly inexpensive, and eating in budget was easy to do. We were able to make some great meals. If you need simple supplies like ketchup, eggs, toilet paper, etc., a nearby store just in town (about a 5 minute walk up the road) should be able to cover you. They also have snacks, cold drinks, etc. If you’re wanting something. The prices there are pretty good, especially if you buy the local brands. The ministry contacts provide purified water jugs, so clean water should never be an issue.

Transportation

Transportation in Jalaca, Honduras
What transportation did you use to enter the country? Where were you coming from? What transportation was used to move throughout the country? Be sure to include the cost per person in USD and contact info if applicable.

People’s Opinions

  1. Jalaca is about a 15 minute drive on dirt roads from the main (paved) road. It’s possible to get a moto-taxi ride up to the main road, then take a bus to the next town once on the main road, but the ministry host doesn’t recommend using moto-taxis. They should be available to give you a ride to the main road by truck, or even to where you’re wanting to go, depending on their schedule/shopping needs.Occasionally, we were able to borrow their second truck and drive to the grocery store, etc. if we payed for gas.

Communication

Communication in Jalaca, Honduras
Did you have cell reception / Internet service? Where? Carrier / Provider, where did you get phones / SIM cards, cost? Country code?

People’s Opinions

  1. I would advise you to get Claro for your entire Squad. It may be a little more expensive, but it’s better in the long run. Also, Claro run promotions all the time, where you can get double or triple your minutes by buying them on that specific day.Tigo seems to be cheaper, but it has horrible service in the mountains and villages(which is where you are most of the time). Also, Tigo and Claro(the two main services in the area) have a lot of problems when communicating with each other.

Off Days / Fun Activities in Jalaca, Honduras
What activities did your team experience? Recommendations? List locations/contact info. Any locations to be avoided? Any extra safety tips for off days?

People’s Opinions

  1. There’s not really anything to do in Jalaca, per se. My best recommendation would be to go to Valley of the Angels on an off day. The town is a nice place to hang out, with great coffee (I recommend the Anchor coffee) and tourist-y shops.Valley of the Angels also has some great, beautiful hikes in what is called a “cloud forest” up in the mountains.Valley of the Angels is about a 2 hour drive from Jalaca, so it’ll be a full day getting there and back.
