Safety

Safety in La Ceiba, Honduras
What do other Racers need to know in order to be safe? Current safety protocols/precautions in place? Any relevant issues/concerns? Any precautionary suggestions?

People’s Opinions

  1. La Ceiba is a bit safer than Tegucigalpa, but there are still some very dangerous neighborhoods within the city. Staying out after dark is not recommended. The area around the mall and the central park seem to be pretty safe. Just be cautious and aware as you travel around the city.

People’s Opinions

  1. The city of la Ceiba is very small. You can walk almost anywhere in the city by foot. The buses can be a little complicated, but from time to time we would use them. Bus fare was about 10 Lemps. Taxis from outside the city averaged around 25 Lemps.

Communication

Communication in La Ceiba, Honduras
Did you have cell reception / Internet service? Where? Carrier / Provider, where did you get phones / SIM cards, cost? Country code?

People’s Opinions

  1. Cell Phones:Getting a Tigo SIM card can be a bit of a pain. You MUST go to an agency in order to get a SIM card as a foreigner. You can’t just buy them and activate them. The agencies can be found in nearly every mall.Internet:Unfortunately, the best internet in town is at Pizza Hut – Hands Down. They always have fast internet. Many coffee shops have it, but it’s painfully slow. It would be impossible to upload a video without being at Pizza Hut.

Financial

Financial in La Ceiba, Honduras
Location of banks or ATMs, notes about transaction fees, best places to exchange money, and other money related advice.

People’s Opinions

  1. We were told that we should only trust the ATMs around the mall. ATMs do not dispense USD. You have to be a citizen of Honduras in order to purchase USD $$. If you know your going to need them make sure you bring them with you. Many of the ATMs around the mall do not charge transaction fees, so shop around.

  1. Scuba Island

  2. Scuba CertificationThis is a pricy one, but it was an experience I’ll never forget. We were able to get our PADI open water scuba certification (they offer other certifications as well) in 3 days. We stayed on a private island in Cayos Cochinos, literally a private island. The price was $325. This included: transportation, meals, 3 days of scuba lessons and certification, scuba equipment rental, 4 dives, and 2 nights on the private island. The dives are in crystal clear water on a reef.http://www.pirateislandsdivers.com/divetraining.html
