Safety

Safety in Valle De Angeles, Honduras
What do other Racers need to know in order to be safe? Current safety protocols/precautions in place? Any relevant issues/concerns? Any precautionary suggestions?

People’s Opinions

  1. Visited this city often on a short term trip and felt very safe in the day with 2 other college-age American girls. Also felt safe out for dinner with locals who were part of the ministry we served.
  2. We felt safe in the city. Most def use the buddy system and you’ll be great. We had a curfew of 5pm but if we felt like we were going to be late we just let our host know. Sometimes we would ask to be out a little later and they would request more than two people going.
  3. Pretty safe area. Be in by 6pm and you will be golden. If you’re going to be out later, just ask hosts.
  4. Relatively safe area. Night time can be a little more precarious, try to be in by 530 or 6pm.
  5. Relatively safe area. Stick to the 2 person rule and be more cautious at night as there was a bar down the street from the house we stayed at that men would stand outside of sometimes intoxicated.

Breakthroughs? Suggestions? Concerns? On a scale of 1-4 (1 being not at all, 4 being absolutely) how strongly would you recommend another World Race team go to this ministry location & why?

People’s Opinions

  1. Ministry:Kids ministry/feeding program:This is David and Scarleth’s main program but we didn’t work with them much because we had a week holiday.BUT our two teams rotated between this ministry and the other one. So if you were working with the kiddos, you would get up in the morning and prepare the breakfast for them (sometimes it was cereal and super easy other mornings it was pancakes and more time consuming— ask them the night before what you are preparing so you know how much time to take) We rode up to the school and taught lesson with the kiddos, ate breakfast and played! They are super sweet kids.Special Needs center: We did so much there and it was a BLAST! We painted, helped to begin the horse corral and lots of other manual labor. It was worth every second. Enjoy it! Go running after on the soccer field! Also the residents are the sweetest and love when you play music and dance! Watch out for Nino… he steals water bottles.
  2. 4 – We were also with David and Scarleth. We didn’t partner with their ministry though, we were at an orphanage for disabled people down the road. The home was amazing and it was the best month by far. Built strong relationships with the residents and cried saying goodbye.
  3. 4- David and Scarleth run an awesome ministry by discipling kids in the area. There is never a lack of things to do, so time flies. Definitely my favorite month of Central America.

Lodging

Lodging in Valle De Angeles, Honduras
Where did you stay? What were the accommodations (sleeping arrangements, toilets, showers, etc.)? Cost (per person per night in USD), Contact info.

People’s Opinions

  1. We stayed with David and Scarleth as well. There are 2 rooms downstairs that have 10 bunks and a queen sized bed between them. The mattresses are indeed pretty thin. There’s hot water, but only if you time it right (after they go to the gym in the evening) because it’s crazy expensive to leave the heater on. There’s one bathroom to share which was fine. The dogs don’t eat laundry off the line often anymore, but still I wouldn’t leave it out for long.
  2. My team and another team stayed with David and Scarleth. Like others said, the mattresses were thin but we all used our mattress pads to sleep on. Our whole team was in a room together in bunk beds and all 12 of us shared a bathroom BUT it wasn’t awful at all! I was thankful that it was cool in the room AND we had hot water (PRAISES) Ask David if you can use his projector to watch movies especially if you make pinatas. We watched movies/Sherlock as teams at night after ministry. There was a washer but it cost $4 USD to use so a lot of us hand washed our own clothes. You can’t leave your clothes on the line too long or the dogs will eat it. So heads up on that.
Meals are made for you. Request more fruit and veggies but be sure to eat it and don’t let them go bad.
  3. Our team and the Comeback Kids stayed with David and Scarleth. We were in tight quarters. The ‘mattresses’ were very thin. I recommend putting your sleeping pad under the mattress. There were hot showers! Wifi was about a mile away, walking distance though.
  4. We stayed with David and Scarleth Jones, their current house has plenty of space to accommodate roughly 12 people. Their housing situation may change, but you can bet that your showers are going to be…. refreshing to say the least. It’s a very comfortable place to stay.
  5. We stayed with David and Scarleth Jones. They had 3 bedrooms with 14 bed spaces available. 2 bathrooms. No hot water.

People’s Opinions

  1. Yolanda cooked for us once, but it was mostly Scarleth’s mom cooking for us. Prepare for some fantastic Honduran food! We were on our own for breakfast and they had pancakes, eggs, oatmeal and cereal for us to use.I second (or third, or fourth) the taco recommendation! The pupusas in town are pretty good, but David and Scarleth opened Mega Pupusa while we were there, so consider supporting them and getting your pupusa fix there! It’s the only place in town with a pupusa the size of your face, and the only one with jalapeno and queso! The pizza place in the Eden plaza has the best pizza I have ever had. So good!
  2. Yolanda made our meals. They were good! I would most def ask for more fruits and veggies. They were not always healthy meals (lots of fried things) We also worked out a lot that month so we were hungry a lot more so really push for oranges or bananas to snack on. A lot of us ended up going to Eden to grab more snacks for evenings.Ask about the tacos. They’re good. They won’t take you there till the end but request that they will take you there sooner because it is a super cheap and a good place to get a small snack of delish tacos. There’s also a legit pupusa place (I adore pupusas) It’s called Virginas and it’s across the street from a coffee shop that we call the airplane place. If they don’t have wifi there, ask them when it is coming and they will bring it. It is cheaper and has better wifi than most places.Eden has wifi and it is semi good if there isn’t a lot of people there.Quinto Pino (I think that’s the name— we called it the pine place) has good wifi sometimes.Legacy Bistro has good wifi.*But go to airplane place for sure a few times. They are Christians and super sweet.
  3. Yolanda (who works for David and Scarleth) cooked for us. The food was great, but we spent about $50 – $100 at Eden. Get pupusas in town. Eden has the best pizza I have ever had… get a cookie coffee…daily.
  4. There are a bunch of great restaurants close by to David and Scarleth’s house. There is a shopping center named Eden which contains a great cafe as well as a place with delicious, high quality pizzas.
  5. We mainly ate here at the house. Our host cooked for us almost all of the time.NOTE: ask David and Scarleth about “The Tacos” in town. They’ll know what you’re talking about. Trust me, they’re bomb.

Transportation

Transportation in Valle De Angeles, Honduras
What transportation did you use to enter the country? Where were you coming from? What transportation was used to move throughout the country? Be sure to include the cost per person in USD and contact info if applicable.

People’s Opinions

  1. We walked everywhere and it isn’t a bad walk at all.We went to Santa Lucia and took a bus there. Our host can tell you more about that. The whole trip there was about $2 there and back for transportation. We walked around the city and it was one of my favorite days. There is a lookout which was nice and chocolate shops even though they weren’t open but it was a holiday. We also went to Teguc to go to the Jesus statue. We got a private bus and it was probably $8 there and back. They drove us in their truck to the kid’s ministry. It was a quick ride up the mountain.
  2. You can walk everywhere in Valle de Angeles. Our contact (Jones’) either took us to Teguc or helped us get there.

Medical

Medical in Valle De Angeles, Honduras
Information on local hospitals / doctors / pharmacies. Where would someone go in a medical emergency? (addresses and contact info).

People’s Opinions

  1. There is a pharmacy by the post office. Good prices, they take card, and very nice!
  2. There’s a hospital next to a gas station on the way out of town if you’re heading to Tegucigalpa. The Jones’ can get you there.

Communication

Communication in Valle De Angeles, Honduras
Did you have cell reception / Internet service? Where? Carrier / Provider, where did you get phones / SIM cards, cost? Country code?

People’s Opinions

  1. Tigo for phone carrier. But note, we had trouble buying sim cards in the Valle. David and Scarleth had to go to Tegucigalpa to get the Sim cards. Wifi is about a mile walking distance.
  2. Tigo is the best cell phone carrier in Honduras, don’t use Claro, it’s annoying (found that out in Nicaragua). The TL and Treasurer will have access to wifi at the house, as for the rest of the team, there are a few coffee shops that have solid wifi. D’Palo at Eden being the closest.
  3. Our contacts (Jones’) had wifi at the house if necessary. There was also free wifi in the city square. Most local coffee shops had wifi as well.

Financial

Financial in Valle De Angeles, Honduras
Location of banks or ATMs, notes about transaction fees, best places to exchange money, and other money related advice.

People’s Opinions

  1. We used the ATM at Eden. The atm at espresso americano never worked for us our entire month there.
  2. They installed a new ATM into the Eden shopping center in October of 16, it works great and is closer than the one located within Espresso Americana.
  3. Espresso Americano has an ATM. There’s also one at the central park that’s a little more private.
  4. There is an ATM at a coffeeshop called Express Americano in the city square. This is the one we used most.

Off Days / Fun Activities

Off Days / Fun Activities in Valle De Angeles, Honduras
What activities did your team experience? Recommendations? List locations/contact info. Any locations to be avoided? Any extra safety tips for off days?

People’s Opinions

  1. For all you coffee addicts!! We went to a few coffeeshops when we were here!1. Espresso Americano// has spotty Wifi but reminds me a lot of Starbucks// they don’t speak English2. Corsair// owned by Christians and they are really sweet! The Wifi is pretty good…they speak pretty good English3. Varietal Coffee Roasters// probably the best Wifi I had all month and they speak really good English!! Also, this is the best coffee I have had on the race so far!
  2. We ran every day. Totally do it. We downloaded a 10k running plan. We either ran at the center after we worked or before we worked. We ran on their soccer field. If the center was closed or if it was the weekend, we ran on the road before you turn left on the road of the center. It was the least hilly (don’t go down the actual hill or you will die) and it was flatter. We went in groups of three or four and felt super safe. Just don’t bring you water bottle unless you want to someone to take it. We just brought water bottles from Eden (the plastic ones)
  3. Santa Lucia — about $2 there and back. There is an overlook that was beautiful and it’s just a cute town in general. I would go if you just want to chill.Teguc — about $8 for a private bus. We went to the Jesus statue and then to the mall. Jesus statue is totally worth it but I would just ask not to go to the mall. It was, as the other team said, “low-key disappointing.” If you have time, I would request to go further into the city to the other mall. My team didn’t go but there is a team that did and they loved it. Apparently there’s an epic movie theater. Ask the other people there (brett and vanessa) for more information about the movie theater.Get to know Brett and Vanessa for sure. I fell in love with them. They would love to have you over for game nights or we played Mario Karts with their girls a lot. They also let us have FaceTime interviews there on their wifi which is nice because it was better wifi than most of the coffee shops. If you suck up, Vanessa will make sweet tea and maybe brownies. Oh… and potentially use their washer FOR FREE! They’re legit. They live right down the road and Brett will more than likely work with you.
  4. Movies in Teguc for $5 on Tuesdays. The mall is low-key disappointing…I think there was only a payless haha. We went to Chili’s for an adventure day. The hike is easy and fun. Our fun activities were eating haha. Scarleth and David can take you to see the giant Jesus (similar to Brazil).
  5. We went and saw the last Hunger Games in Tegucigalpa and got VIP seating for less than $5. It was legit. There’s also a hike to a sweet waterfall that’s fun and easy.

People’s Opinions

  1. BRETT AND VANESSA — seriously look them up. Brett will probably work with you. Probably my favorite couple on the race. They have three girls, one in college in the states and two others who are in Honduras. They love to host and are super intentional.
  2. If David and Scarleth are your hosts, next door there is a wonderful American couple who are in the process of fostering/ adopting two girls from Honduras. They’re super sweet! Down the street is Brett and Vanessa. Brett came to ministry with us, so we got to know him well! He is generous, kind, funny, and loves hanging out with Racers!
