when we went in June 2015, they placed a tourist visa, stating if you are in the country for ONLY 30 days you can enter for free. If you need longer than 30 days, you can pay 45 USD… with cash or cc at a window following landing in Medan.

6 GB of data in Makassar was 100,000 RP, which comes to about $7. Super easy to get more data if necessary.
we used Telkocel, we bought it at the airport for 50,000 IR, I recommend getting 75-100,000 IR on your sim for a month use, we were only there for 10 days and I used mine up fast. Money on a sim is called Pulsa in Indo

People’s Opinions
We used blue bird taxi service for everything, ranged about $3 for each taxi ride, and it was in a nice car. You can also set up buses, and local taxi to pick you up at the airport and take you where ever from the blue bird website. Just google blue bird taxi Medan. The buses called laki laki tried to help take us once, but we were going opposite directions. There are motor taxis but they will over charge you… so just stay away unless you are with a local!
Culture

People’s Opinions
Preferable to not wear shorts, or tanks its a very conservative culture, especially if you are with locals. Respecting you elders is super important, really respect is huge there, show it and you will receive it!

LOGISTICS!We did not buy sim cards here because we all had access to constant wifi and the sim cards expired after 3 days — talk to your squad leaders and TL’s about what is best for your squad. All of Indonesia was pretty much air travel, myself and my other logistics leader had to fly separately into Vietnam which was challenging. Vietnam has a very strict border crossing so we applied for our “letters” from the government 2 weeks in advance to make sure there was no problems. We accidentally got one of the passport numbers on someones visa incorrect and we ended up having to pay the border guards off (in cash) so that she could exit! So be careful!Indonesia wasn’t hard to get through security but be aware that your group brings a lot of attention so loop in TL’s as best as you can during the process that way they can keep their team members focused on making flights, not Krispy Kreme or Burger King!(protip: my team ended up needing to go on a flight to Medan the day after landing and instead of going into Jakarta — we recommend sleeping in the airport at terminal 3!! It was comfy, had aircon and was extremely safe. There are even a few food places over 24hrs and once you get through security there are free showers in the terminal!!)
