I highly recommend always traveling in 2s or 3s, avoid going out at night, and especially women never travel alone. We always covered shoulders and knees as well, with the muslim population there it honestly just felt weird and exposing to us to wear anything less conservative than a t-shirt and pants, or a long skirt.

This was a struggle… most teams found air b&bs or struggled to, and others signed up and found hosts through Workaway. There was a hotel in town though that we stayed in called Pesonna. THEY ROCKED! We payed $2 of personal money to cover our stay there though which was well worth it. They had clean rooms and showers, fridges in the rooms (that sometimes didn’t work), a tea kettle, an Indomaret right next to it, a great laundry place right down the road, and a mall a 5 minute walk from it. We landed on this place after staying at two crappy hotels under this chain hotel business called OYO, I would highly recommend NOT booking anything through them!

We mostly ate Grab food, noodles or other little snack things from the Indomarets, or walked to the mall to get food. Grab food has so many options.

A lot of us got an app called GOJEK, its like the Indonesia competitor to Grab, its cheaper most times. They will call you every time you book them and most likely will not speak English, just kindly remind them to look at the map on their app, maybe say the name of the place to picky up one more time and say “thanks see you soon!”, that seemed to work for us.

Most of my team got SIM cards through Telkomsel when we flew into Makassar. We spent a week in the middle of the jungle in Masamba and only had one issue with service. Keep in mind how much data you buy. Telkomsel sections off the amount of data you can use for different functions on your phone. If you buy 6 GB of data on your phone, you can use a specific amount of that 6 for social media, and a specific amount for hotspotting other people, and a specific amount for using the internet, and so on.

Ah man this culture/city was a tough one. Just be prepared to be asked to take a lot of selfies with everyone, especially women and young kids. Ladies, the nonverbals and looks you might get from men aren’t gonna be great, just keep smiling it’ll be okay I promise. It might be super overwhelming going in public, especially malls, we tried our very best to be kind despite the herd of people often following us around in grocery stores asking to take our picture or just pointing, laughing, or talking at or to us.
