Safety in Amman, Jordan What do other Racers need to know in order to be safe? Current safety protocols/precautions in place? Any relevant issues/concerns? Any precautionary suggestions?
People’s Opinions
We commonly walk places by ourselves and haven’t had safety issues; however, you may encounter awkward and uncomfortable situations while out and about. There was one instance when a lady from our squad was followed by one man, but the situation was resolved without incident. There are also insistent salespeople, flirtatious men, and others who may tag along with you for a distance while asking for money. Please remember that culturally it is frowned upon for women to walk alone late at night (after 9:00pm is a general rule of thumb).

People’s Opinions
My team, 138, worked in a non-profit restaurant called Ezwitti. The food is SO cheap, but it’s absolutely delicious and all homemade. It’s a pay-it forward kind of place, where they ask for you to pay for your meal and then pay for another persons’ meal. It’s super cheap, only .50 JD which is very well priced and 1 JD would be enough for you and to pay it forward for someone else who can’t pay for it. There was also a place that we got to sort clothes and toys for refugees, but I don’t remember what it’s called. We met MANY people from different countries, including a lot of Americans and Canadians. There’s plenty of opportunity! Plus, there’s so many coffee shops around here where you can do plenty of coffee shop ministry.
Lodging
Lodging in Amman, Jordan Where did you stay? What were the accommodations (sleeping arrangements, toilets, showers, etc.)? Cost (per person per night in USD), Contact info.
People’s Opinions
Don’t stay at Sydney Hostel/Hotel. The owner Victor scammed our squad multiple times in multiple different ways. We changed teams halfway through the month. My team at the start of the month stayed at Jordan Tower Hotel and it was very nice. Al Saadeh Hotel Apartments is where my other team spent the second half of the month. I don’t know what the prices were, but Jordan Tower Hotel was over budget for us. Jordan Tower Hotel is a 10 minute walk to the city center. I was told we had a smaller lodging budget than the last squad that was in Amman. Al Saadeh Hotel Apartments was under budget because they gave us a discount. Al Saadeh was a 15 minute drive to the city center.

My team, 138, found an amazing smoothie place within a 5 minute walk of the Sydney hostel. The guy there is super sweet, and he always gave us free samples when we passed his store, and he always greeted us with a smile and a cheerful wave. I would highly recommend a pineapple and coconut smoothie, basically tasting like a piña colada without alcohol! Also, he uses FRESH fruit and ingredients, and he makes sure he is well stocked with fresh foods.
Jordan can be expensive but there’s places you can find to eat in budget! There’s 50 cent falafel on the streets and a delivery app called Talabat (it seems to only take cash. None of our cards worked) if you’re missing home there’s Starbucks around Amman and Dominos. We found it best to buy groceries and cook together every night and if we had left over money we would do a team dinner

People’s Opinions
Do NOT take taxis. They will overcharge you. You should never be paying over 3JD for local transport, unless it’s to Petra or one of the places that may take a bit to get there (Dead Sea, Jesus’ Baptism site, Mount Nebo). We had someone on our team take a taxi and get charged 15JD; we of course reimbursed her, BUT that should not happen. If they try to overcharge you, do not be afraid to get out of the taxi -> we got that tip from a local.
Uber app !!! You can order taxis or Ubers off the app and choose if you want to use card or cash. If you hail taxis off the street we’ve had experiences off them trying to rip us off. You shouldn’t pay more than 3JD for anywhere 10-15 minutes away
Uber is used extensively throughout Amman, though it is technically illegal. It helps you get fair taxi prices.
Medical
Medical in Amman, Jordan Information on local hospitals / doctors / pharmacies. Where would someone go in a medical emergency? (addresses and contact info).
People’s Opinions
Abdali Hospital is legit. There’s an Emergancy room and as well as a pharmacy and doctors offices all throughout the building. I went to the stomach doctor, Gyno, and ER and they all took really good care of me. You do have to pay out of pocket and get reimbursed. Jordan has good doctors and they aren’t that expensive compared to America
Communication
Communication in Amman, Jordan Did you have cell reception / Internet service? Where? Carrier / Provider, where did you get phones / SIM cards, cost? Country code?
People’s Opinions
We got sim cards from a small little phone shop across the street from ruins of the roman bathhouse near the city center. The carrier was Umniah and we spent 16 JOD which is about $22.50 for 45gb of 4G. Our sim cards did have numbers and some people had cell reception and some people didn’t, if I remember correctly. The country code is +962.
Financial
Financial in Amman, Jordan Location of banks or ATMs, notes about transaction fees, best places to exchange money, and other money related advice.
People’s Opinions
There’s ATM’s everywhere! There’s one directly across from Sydney up the street (you can see it as soon as you walk out the doors though), there’s one very close to the Starbucks on that same street, BUT sometimes they do shut down randomly, or maybe one will be working and not the other. Basically, you play ATM roulette, but it makes it interesting for sure. I know there is one exchange place by the Fruits and Veggies market (also a great place for FRESH fruits and veggies which is KEY for Race survival), but our treasurer will probably post later in regards to where some are/which has the best exchange rate, etc.

TALENTED tattoo artist in Amman, but is on the outskirts. Gives you tea and is so kind. I think he has a price minimum of 150JOD but I got a medium/big tattoo from him and he kept it at his minimum. His insta: @Mohammed.z3bi
We had a mini-debrief in Wadi Rum over Christmas which is a desert. Films like “The Martian” and “Lawrence of Arabia” where filmed there. We spent a day in Petra. The Jordan Pass allowed us into a lot of places. It got us into Petra, a Roman Amphitheatre, Citadel, and Mt. Nebo. It can also get you into lots of other places. The Jordan Museum in Amman has some of the Dead Sea Scrolls in it and it costs only 5 JD to get.
We had several really great adventure days in Jordan. We spent one whole day in Petra and another day we went to Mt. Nebo, the Dead Sea, and saw the remnants of Herod’s Palace.

Tips
People’s Opinions
Some cultural things to consider…1. Wet hair has sexual connotations. Dry your hair before going outside.2. One woman and one man should avoid walking together alone/getting into a cab together alone because it will be assumed that they are sleeping together.3. Be aware of modest dress in Jordan (covering the neck, long pants and long sleeves for women).4. Head coverings are REQUIRED for women to enter a mosque.5. Head coverings aren’t mandatory for women in touristy places, but local women may be more likely to strike up conversation with you (ladies) if you wear a head coveringCheck out this article for additional cultural information… https://www.roughguides.com/jordan/culture-etiquette/

You need a visa for Jordan and our whole team decided to get the Jordan Pass. It costs more than the regular visa, but with it, you get a one-day pass to Petra as well as other famous sites. Without the Jordan Pass, you would have to pay around $100 to get into Petra. So, if you plan on going to Petra, this is the way to go.You only need to have it downloaded on your phone when you go through passport control at the airport.Website: https://www.jordanpass.jo/
