Safety

Safety in Nyahururu, Kenya
What do other Racers need to know in order to be safe? Current safety protocols/precautions in place? Any relevant issues/concerns? Any precautionary suggestions?

People’s Opinions

  1. We felt very safe during the day. We walked to and from ministry with no issues. However, at night, there are hippo that wander around looking for food. So, after 7pm, we didn’t walk anywhere. We would just take a private taxi if we had to be out late.

People’s Opinions

  1. We worked with Mana Worldwide through Pastor Philip. It was awesome. We worked with his school to feed the children. We got to play for hours with them each day because they were on break. If they were in session, we would have been teaching every day. Everyone on the team loved ministry this month and really connected. On Sundays, we went to local high schools and ministered.

What transportation did you use to enter the country? Where were you coming from? What transportation was used to move throughout the country? Be sure to include the cost per person in USD and contact info if applicable.

People’s Opinions

  1. Transportation was cheap. We could get a boda (motorcycle taxi) across town for 40 cents and a private taxi for $1.50. We rode a matatu (public taxi) to the closest mall in Nakuru for $2.00. We felt safe on public transport. Ask your host for the number to a private taxi he trusts.

Off Days / Fun Activities

Off Days / Fun Activities in Nyahururu, Kenya
What activities did your team experience? Recommendations? List locations/contact info. Any locations to be avoided? Any extra safety tips for off days?

People’s Opinions

  1. We lived a ten minute walk from Thomson Falls. It is $2 to get in and you can walk down for free. Don’t walk down without a guide and security (ask your host for help hiring those) though. We were told it is unsafe because of thieves. If you take a picture with the chameleons they “force on you” or with the people in costume, they will expect money. But, it was beautiful and definitely worth two bucks!
