Safety in Klaipeda, Lithuania What do other Racers need to know in order to be safe? Current safety protocols/precautions in place? Any relevant issues/concerns? Any precautionary suggestions?
People’s Opinions
Safety in Klaipeda is fairly good. Our team never had any issues with pick-pocketing or anything else. During the summer months the sun doesn’t start setting till around 10:30 pm so you can walk around at night with your team and still be able to see everything around you. Our host did warn us about being careful walking to and from the beach at night, drunks will hang out there.

People’s Opinions
We worked for Miesto Baznycia – City Church.I would rate it a 3. I loved it because it was all about forming relationships. But there was not a lot of assigned work, so you would have to sometimes figure out your own ministry. I do think World Race teams could continue going their and helping/encouraging the church and locals to go deeper with the Lord!During my time in Lithuania our team was asked to do manual labor for the church, plan Sunday school, run Sunday school, help/lead the youth group, help the worship team, help with prayer nights on Wednesday, organize events for the church, pray for the church, and do other things that came along. Within our first couple days helping the church I could tell that the month was dedicated to relationships.

We were working for Miesto Baznycia (City Church) and they actually have rooms they rent out inside the church. So, they gave our team an apartment for the month! We had three bedrooms, a kitchen, a bathroom (with a bathtub) and a laundry machine! Because they were our host we actually got to stay for free.

We were in charge of making all our own meals while working for City Church. As a team we would walk to the local Maxima and buy groceries for about a week at a time. You have to pay for bags so we would bring our backpacks along with bags to put the groceries in. The prices at Maxima are good so you can make delicious filling meals as a team.If you walk out of City Church to the main road, take a left and then walk down to the roundabout there is the Maxima and a few local pubs.

When you are living in Klaipeda, the number 6 bus is your friend. The 6 bus is the bus that goes between City Church, downtown, the Acropolis, and other such stops. To get on the bus or microbus costs 70 euro cents. If you have a ticket you can use it on the bus but not the microbus. I would recommend actually buying a bus pass for the month. You will have much more freedom if you just buy a bus pass you can swipe and it will probably save you money.
There are also taxis, but if you need a taxi call one because they are cheaper that way. Our contact would always call the taxi company if we needed them. (We mainly needed them to get to and from the bus stop with our backpacks.)

We used Omnitel. You get a member card you can bring to any Omnitel shop and ask for a certain amount of euro to be added to your card to get more minutes. It seemed to work well.

Hangout in downtown Klaipeda, take the ferry to the little island nearby and have a picnic on the beach, or take a train to Vilnius for a long weekend! Our team did all these things and they were super fun! (The best was the long weekend in Vilnius. Take the train. Stay in a hostel. Explore and have fun!)
