Safety

Safety in Madisi, Malawi
What do other Racers need to know in order to be safe? Current safety protocols/precautions in place? Any relevant issues/concerns? Any precautionary suggestions?

People’s Opinions

  1. We felt very safe here pretty much all month. We always had a local with us when we traveled into the city and we rarely went anywhere alone or at night. They advised that we be back at our house by around 6pm.

Ministry Summary

Ministry Summary in Madisi, Malawi
Breakthroughs? Suggestions? Concerns? On a scale of 1-4 (1 being not at all, 4 being absolutely) how strongly would you recommend another World Race team go to this ministry location & why?

People’s Opinions

  1. The ministry here was definitely a 4. It was amazing. We were here for Christmas so we got to put on a Christmas program for the after school program kids. This community loves so well and definitely does a great job at making us feel as at home as we can. We often got to just jump in with the camp leaders and do their everyday life with them which was a lot of kids ministry all the time.

Lodging

Where did you stay? What were the accommodations (sleeping arrangements, toilets, showers, etc.)? Cost (per person per night in USD), Contact info.

People’s Opinions

  1. We stayed in the Rise Malawi office so we had two bedrooms for 6 of us. We each had beds and mosquito nets provided, it was amazing and way more than we expected going in. We had no fridge though because of the inconsistency of electricity (sometimes we were out for about 18 hours) and we had a squatty potty out back as the toilet…beware of cockroaches after dark. We would try to time it so we went to the bathroom at dusk before it got too dark and then wait until the morning when we got up. Sometimes you just need to have courage and go though. We also had a lot of the village kids that would stand at the windows and stare in at us. We often felt like we were in a zoo. Overall I absolutely loved our house in malawi.

Food / Meals

Food / Meals in Madisi, Malawi
What did you eat? Where did you get the food? Cost (per person per day in USD)? Contact info (if applicable).

People’s Opinions

  1. We would make our own food so it was great. We ate lunch usually with all of the other camp leaders so they made us lunches there most days. Cooking our own food was fun though because of no refrigerator so mainly we ate oatmeal, spaghetti and rice and beans. Oh and lots of Pb&j. We went into Lilongwe on our off day to get our groceries for the week and our host Za would put them in his car and bring them back to the village for us the next time he came out. Because we were on public minibuses.

Transportation

Transportation in Madisi, Malawi
What transportation did you use to enter the country? Where were you coming from? What transportation was used to move throughout the country? Be sure to include the cost per person in USD and contact info if applicable.

People’s Opinions

  1. We walked most places but we did need to go into Lilongwe to get wifi and groceries and use the ATM. (NO ATM IN MADISI) Public transport in Africa is just always an adventure so that’s all a whole other story. We always had a local with us though.
