Safety in Senga Bay, Malawi
What do other Racers need to know in order to be safe? Current safety protocols/precautions in place? Any relevant issues/concerns? Any precautionary suggestions?

People’s Opinions

  1. This area is very prone to Malaria and this particular strain of the virus is resistant to Doxycycline malarial prophylaxis. If you have doxycycline for your anti-malaria medication, continue to take it during your stay. DO NOT stop taking doxycycline, as you will need to keep it in your system for previous or future African countries on your route and any antibiotic against malaria is better than none. Be smart to avoid getting bitten: use bug spray (more DEET the better), bug nets or tents, and long sleeve shirts or pants (when possible).

  • Cell reception: Yes
  • Internet: Closest place–Livingstonia Resort. You buy it by the GB. You’ll have to take intentional time out to get things done that need to be done.
  • Downside: Livingstonia is pretty expensive.

Did you have cell reception / Internet service? Where? Carrier / Provider, where did you get phones / SIM cards, cost? Country code?

People’s Opinions

  1. If you don’t NEED internet (i.e. you are not a team leader, logistics coordinator or treasurer), I challenge you to not use it. Stay away from internet as much as possible, or at least limit yourself to 1-2 uses for the entire month. You’re in the bush and you will be removed from most of your comforts. Take the opportunity in Senga Bay to get away from everything, get to know Johann’s heart, talk to everyone you meet and let God speak to you. Malawi can be the most life-changing month of your race, if you let it.
