Safety

  • Don’t go out alone, always at least have one person with you.
  • Don’t go out at night if not needed
  • Don’t take valuables out with you into the villages, lots of people around, easy for something to go missing.

Safety in Haripur, Nepal
What do other Racers need to know in order to be safe? Current safety protocols/precautions in place? Any relevant issues/concerns? Any precautionary suggestions?

People’s Opinions

  1. Uncle and his sons killed two cobras in the garden. Teams walk by the garden to get from the sleeping area to the house where food is served. They told us to be careful during the afternoon and during dusk because that is when the snakes come out from their holes, but it is difficult avoiding their territory since we eat lunch during the afternoon and eat dinner at dusk.

People’s Opinions

  1. We stayed with one other team in Haripur. My team taught at the school and the other team worked with the church. The school team teaches English for about 3 hours each day and occasionally goes out on to minister to local villages with Uncle and the others and the church team works in the local community and nearby villages preaching, handing out tracks, praying, and teaching.

Lodging

  • Stayed in classrooms in the school building
  • Used sleeping pads and mosquito nets- Uncle has a few nets
  • The room downstairs has a ceiling fan- electricity is random though
  • May stay at their house, girls upstairs, boys downstairs

Lodging in Haripur, Nepal
Where did you stay? What were the accommodations (sleeping arrangements, toilets, showers, etc.)? Cost (per person per night in USD), Contact info.

People’s Opinions

  1. Our team stayed in a classroom. We used our sleeping pads and they provided outlets to charge our electronics. Electricity comes on for a few hours each day. Brother Subash gave us a lock for our room so all of our items were always safe. There is a pipe they’ve set up as a make-shift shower in one of the two squatties, but our team took bucket showers mostly. There is a hand pump that you can pretty easily use to wash your hair as well. Toilet paper is difficult to find so stock up before coming out to the village.

  1. Uncle and his family are AMAZING cooks. They make chai for you every morning and each meal is delicious. They make a variety of food and even cater to our American tastebuds, adding pancakes as a side with many meals.

Transportation

  • Usually walked to most places around the village
  • Buses are about 50 cents per person
  • 10 hours from Katmandu- rode with Uncle to the village, bring motion sickness pills because you will be going up in the mountains

Transportation in Haripur, Nepal
What transportation did you use to enter the country? Where were you coming from? What transportation was used to move throughout the country? Be sure to include the cost per person in USD and contact info if applicable.

People’s Opinions

  1. We took a Tata Jeep from Kathmandu to Haripur and rode through the mountains to get here. That’s definitely the better option if it’s within your budget. The other option is taking public transportation around the mountain. The jeeps take about 6 hours and the buses about 10. The jeeps say that they hold 11 but with a team and packs, you’ll fill the entire jeep.

Medical

Medical in Haripur, Nepal
Information on local hospitals / doctors / pharmacies. Where would someone go in a medical emergency? (addresses and contact info).

People’s Opinions

  1. I developed a skin infection because of all of the dust and pollution. Uncle took me to the leprosy hospital. It is pretty far away, but very clean, fast, and cheap. It is run by Christians so they will take very good care of you.

People’s Opinions

  1. Go to the ATM in Katmandu before you leave for the village. ATMs are a little difficult to get to. If you are taking out team money, take out as much as you can before you leave and at every ATM you can stop at.
