Safety in Kothe, Nepal What do other Racers need to know in order to be safe? Current safety protocols/precautions in place? Any relevant issues/concerns? Any precautionary suggestions?
People’s Opinions
We had zero safety issues this whole month, which was incredible! Theft was not a problem here because we live with the Pastor’s entire extended family and they are really the only ones who walk around that area. It’s also an isolated area off the side of the road so not many people who don’t live there come by. Be smart though- when people come for church, just pack up your stuff into your bag and move it to the side. Yes, they’re all Christians, but they’re also very poor and you don’t want to tempt anyone to steal. When you’re walking into the Market for wifi, you’ll see a lot of stares (normal for the WR), and many people will ask you where you’re staying and what you’re doing in this random place in Nepal (especially the police). Always carry your passport with you when you go past the police checkpoints (AKA, to the market) so they can’t accuse you of anything. A couple of us forgot our passports one time when we went to the Market and a policeman was trying to accuse us of being in Nepal without a Visa.

People’s Opinions
We stayed in the church room in the Pastor’s village, and the 2 men on our team stayed in the smaller room below the church. There are 2 squattys outside the church and 1 shower.Take advantage of the beautiful river that is right in your backyard. We loved crossing the bridge and having quiet times by the riverbank (don’t go in though, it’s much too fast and has rapids).

Communication is key! If you love something, tell them. If you don’t love something, let them know and they’ll do what they can to accommodate. On one of our off days our team was just talking about how much we miss peanut butter and the next day it showed up with lunch. If you’re there in the summer (like we were), it’ll be super hot. We found out our last week there that there is an ice cream stand at the Market (ask Samuel to take you there). Super cheap and refreshing. Do it!

People’s Opinions
There are busses that run past Kothe that come every 20 minutes or so. It costs 10 rupees to get to the market from there, and 10 to get back. Don’t let them overcharge you. Also, the busses that stop in these places don’t run after 4PM, so if you plan to take the bus back from the market, plan accordingly otherwise you’ll be walking.

The Last Resort is about a 45 minute drive north. This means the worlds tallest Canyon Swing and second tallest Bungy!! I did the Canyon Swing and loved it! Definitely worth every penny.
